Art on the Avenue: Opening Reception for “Unveiling a Forgotten Legacy”

Each quarter, our Art on the Ave program highlights a different artist, and this time, they’re excited to showcase the incredible work of Zola Lamothe at the historic Walker Building.

Sharing one’s legacy is one of the deepest forms of gratitude we can express. At this event, you’re invited to celebrate this act by voicing your appreciation for a loved one, adding to the Gratitude Garden, or experiencing Unveiling a Forgotten Legacy, an homage to the Black communities that brought Indiana Avenue to life.

The heart of the event is the powerful photography exhibit, Unveiling a Forgotten Legacy, which sheds light on the Black neighborhoods displaced by IUPUI’s expansion. The exhibit delves into critical themes such as gentrification, redlining, and the importance of amplifying marginalized voices, all while embracing the spirit of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.”

This event encourages us to honor our family legacies and stories. All ages are welcome to participate in interactive activities, thought-provoking conversation prompts, and more. Attendees are also invited to bring a photo or item representing their ancestors to share in a collective storytelling session—an opportunity to reflect on the past and celebrate the resilience of those who came before us.

PLEASE NOTE: The artist invites attendees to bring an item representing an ancestor they’d like to share their gratitude for.

The event is finished.
